Nature‑Based Play Therapy blends the proven healing power of play therapy with the restorative, regulating effects of being outdoors. In gently paced sessions, we slow down, reconnect with the senses, and create a safe therapeutic relationship where children can express what’s happening on the inside through play, movement, creativity, and exploration in nature. Many children feel less pressure outside than they do in an office, which can make it easier for big feelings to emerge and shift in a natural, developmentally appropriate way.
Nature‑Based Play Therapy keeps the core of play therapy intact, relationship first and child‑led, while using the natural environment (sticks, stones, sand, leaves, water, and open space) as a flexible, calming “co‑therapist” that supports regulation and engagement.
As the child plays, the therapist tracks themes, supports emotional language when appropriate, and offers gentle prompts only when they fit, never forcing disclosure so that the child can process experiences through their natural language of play. We close by reflecting on what the child noticed and by choosing one small, practical “take‑home” practice to support regulation and carry progress into daily life.
Parent involvement is often an important part of the process, as nature-based play therapy tends to work best when a parent/caregiver is actively involved in treatment in an appropriate, supportive way. Depending on your child’s needs, this may look like an initial parent intake and goal‑setting conversation, periodic caregiver check‑ins, and coaching on routines and co‑regulation tools that fit your family’s real life. Outdoor work is planned with comfort and safety in mind, including attention to weather, sensory preferences, allergies, and risk factors, with clear boundaries for what constitutes a clinically appropriate and physically safe outdoor session.
